4 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Design
Ball peen hammen shall have a stniking face on onc end of ithe head for use stmking punches and chisels, and a ball peen on the opposite end for une in riveting. shaping. and straightening unhardened metals
(a) The stnking face shall have a convex shape
(b) The ball peen shall have a smoothly contoured shape that is approximately hemispherical
(C) The striking face shall have a chamter ot uppoximatrly 45 drg (or equvalent radins) around the perime ter with a width rqual to approximately one tenth the diameter of the bell a measured acros the chamfer angle For example, if the bell diameter equals 1 in, then the chamler width equals approuimately 0.10 in.
(d) Hamumers shall pass the tests specified in para 5
(e) The head and handle shallbe free of nonfunctional sharp edge, points, and surface roughness that could inlict personal injury on the user when handling the hummer
4.2 Materials
The materials used in the manufacure of hammers shall be as such to produce hammers conforning to the requirements specified herein
4.3 Mechanical Properties
The striking face shall be hardened and tempered to 45 HRC to 60 HRC or equivalent
tbI The ball peen shall be hardened and tempered to 45 HRC to 60 HRC or equivalent.
5 TESTS
Many tests required herein are inherently hazardous and adequste safeguands for personnel and property shall be emplayed in conducting such tests
Sample hamumers shal be tested and shall conforn to the requinements of all applicable tests specified in paras 51 turoragh 5.5. Separate (new) samples shali be used tor each of the tests. Failure to meet the requireents of any one of the tests indicates the hamumers do not comply with this Standard.
5.1 Hardness Determination Test
Hardnes determination with rerpect te the face and bal peen shall be made in accordance wih ASTM E 18.
